Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a syndrome characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. It is known as a disorder of gut-brain interaction due to dysregulation of the gut-brain axis (bidirectional signaling between the gut and the brain), which can be related to central and peripheral mechanisms and results in significant healthcare expenditures and reductions in health-related quality of life.
